My Own Tribute to John Paul II

Saturday, April 2nd, 2005

Well Pope John Paul II has died, and I’ve been thinking about a fitting tribute to him. Only one thing came to mind. You may have heard it.

Pope John Paul was visiting Buckingham Palace, and he and Queen Elizabeth were sitting in a grand stand outside waiting to speak to a huge contingent. Queen Elizabeth gets a bit cocky and says “I help humanity just as much as you. Why, with a wave of my hands, I can make the 3,000 English people in this audience applaud!” Finishing, she stood up and waved her hand at the crowd. The English people in the audience, being good sports, applauded.
Queen Elizabeth sits down, satisfied. The pope says, “You think that’s something? With one wave of my arm, I can make every Irish person around the world happy for at least a good week or so!”
The Queen replies to this, “Well, if you could, why don’t you? That would be great!”
The pope gets up slowly from his chair, raises his arm, and slaps Queen Elizabeth across the face.

Rest well, pope!
