Here is a list compiled by an avid backpacker:

Clothes Pins – Yes, you may find yourself hanging things out to dry. Just a couple will do.

Power Converter

A Guidebook – If you are the kind of traveler who likes to study the guide book before you go, then you will probably want to go ahead and take it with you. Personally I only used mine for the maps as I arrived by train. Once I arrived at my hostel there was ample information available.

Money Belt – Some go with, some go without. I always wear a money belt just to be on the safe side. I am 6 foot 2, weigh about 190 pounds, and both of my arms are tattooed from top to bottom, but I wouldn’t doubt it if a thief tried to pick my pocket as well. People just don’t care anymore. It’s all about the money so you had better keep your safe.

A money belt is one of the cheapest, safest, and easiest ways of doing this.

Swiss Army Knife – Not big on this one but I don’t really do a lot of camping. If you plan on doing some camping while on the go, bringing a pocket knife may be a good idea.

Socks – I usually take at least 5 pair but I think I am quite generous in that area. I tend to do a LOT of walking and because of it I have to do a LOT of washing. Having a few extra pair around can be helpful on a long and hot day.

Many suggest only 2 or 3 pair but I say use your judgment depending on how you sweat and react to long walks.

A few pairs of underwear – I wear boxers and I can easily fold them in ways that make them as small as an ink pen so it is easy for me to get away with 5 pair. For the ladies I don’t think finding space for underwear will be an issue.

One pair of jeans/pants – A lot of backpackers wear jeans, I never understood that. Jeans are a pain in the ass in my opinion. They are hot and heavy, and they take FOREVER to dry after a wash or rain.

I prefer a thin cargo pant or something that doesn’t weigh a lot and will dry quickly.

One pair of the convertible pants/shorts – These have come in handy.

Toothbrush and toothpaste

Shaving razor

Shampoo & Soap – I just take a bottle of Castile Soap and use it for both but I know that wont work for the gals. Just try and take small portions that are well sealed.

Condoms – Sex happens!

Photocopies of all my important documents

A pen and a notebook or journal
