It’s a Brave New World

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

This post is a first for pinkeyedjim.com. I am writing this post from my new cell phone!

I just bought a Nokia E62 and got the unlimited data plan with it. And I’m able to access the backend of my wordpress blog and everything. This PDA-phone is amazing! I can even create and edit Word, Excel and other Office documents from it. I’m elated so far.

Hopefully this means I’ll be doing quite a bit more posting, too!

Foot in Mouth Award - October 2 2006

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

Can anyone guess who said this? It’s from July 25, 2006. Hint: He may soon be on the very list of which he is speaking.

Mr. Speaker, I rise to offer my strong support for the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act.

I remember that tragic day in Hollywood, Florida, when a young Adam Walsh hit the headlines, having been abducted from a mall in our State. Over 2 years ago, his father, John Walsh, and Ernie Allen approached me to discuss what they saw as a growing and dangerous threat to our children, sex offenders. We talked about the fact there were over 500,000 sex offenders listed on various State registries, but because of poor Federal and State laws, we were missing over 150,000 of them. Soon after that meeting, I began work on the Sex Offender Registration Notification Act, which is contained in this bill today.

The Adam Walsh Act is the most comprehensive piece of child protection legislation this Congress has ever considered. The bill creates, among other things, new State and Federal regulations, community notification requirements, as well as new Federal criminal penalties for sex offenders. It also gives law enforcement new resources, including authorizing U.S. Marshals to go after missing sex offenders, 20 new task forces, 200 new Federal prosecutors, 45 new forensic scientists dedicated to investigating crimes against children.

Osama bin Laden dead? No Shit.

Saturday, September 23rd, 2006

Apparently a French intelligence document was leaked that suggests that Osama bin Laden died in Pakistan from Typhoid on August 23rd. Frankly I’m shocked.

Shocked that he even possibly lasted this long.

Now I know the rumors of his kidney disease are unsubstantiated. But I still think it’s likely, given all the information I’ve read.

My boss, Vixen, is on dialysis three times a week. The way she feels right before dialysis, when her blood is at its most toxic, pains even me.

There is no fucking way that a kidney patient could live for 5 years in the mountains of Pakistan.

I know, I know. I’m just railing off some crazy conspiracy theory. Maybe Osama’s been visiting Plastic Surgeons too. I guess none of it really matters until we see a body. And trust me, if the US government knew where to locate a body, we’d see a body.

Midterm elections are only two months away.

NORML.ORG US: Anti-Drug Ads a Waste, Auditors Say

NORML.ORG US: Anti-Drug Ads a Waste, Auditors Say

Here’s a real shocker: The Anti-Pot ONDCP Ads are a huge waste of money, according to the Government Accountability Office, which commissioned Westat, an independent evaluator, to evaluate the ads.

Westat found the ads had no “significant favorable effects” in deterring children from trying marijuana or in getting them to stop. Rather, it found that more 12- to 13-year-olds were trying the drug after seeing the ads, the GAO said.

The Head of the ONDCP, John Walters, naturally opposed these data:

“We have dealt with criticism of the campaign from adversaries, including those who advocate the legalization of drugs,” he said. “And we have periodically needed to place these findings in context, especially because all major youth surveys report declining teen drug use.”

Since our Congress commissioned the study, Walters must be referring to our Republican-led congress as an “adversary” possibly even one that “advocates the use of drugs”.

Don’t make me laugh.

Restaurant in Mumbai to Change Name from Hitler’s Cross Due to Protests

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

MUMBAI (Reuters) - A restaurant in India’s financial hub has agreed to change its name from “Hitler’s Cross” following strong protests by the country’s tiny Jewish community and pressure from Israel.

“Hitler’s Cross,” which opened a week ago using posters of the Fuehrer and Nazi swastikas for publicity, initially refused to change its name, but relented Thursday and covered its signboards with white cloth.

The restaurant’s name and its marketing gimmick had infuriated India’s Jewish population, which had said it would fight any attempts at “rehabilitating Hitler.”

A small restaurant, featuring continental cuisine and hookahs, Hitler’s Cross aimed to distinguish itself as “different” amongst the crowded Mumbai restaurant market. The question is, did they go too far?

This reminds me a lot of the “Fat Bitch” controversy that went on here at Rutgers a while ago. I think it’s daft to think that something as simple as a restaurant could ever “rehabilitate Hitler.” I also think that simple boycotts are the proper way to resolve something like this. The restaurant owner should have every right to call his restaurant whatever he wants. People who may be offended by such a name have every right to boycott such a restaurant and to urge their friends to do the same. Granted they also have the right to protest such a name, but I just feel that attacking another’s freedom of speech is a negative use of protesting (considering it’s freedom of speech that grants one’s right to protest).

A restaurant called Hitler’s Cross would have failed in the long run anyway, methinks. All these protesters really did was hasten the process at the expense of the restaurant owner’s freedom of speech, and to me that’s no victory.

Smoking cuts for classic cartoons after UK complaint

Monday, August 21st, 2006

LONDON (Reuters) - Turner Broadcasting is scouring more than 1,500 classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons, including old favorites “Tom and Jerry,” “The Flinstones” and “Scooby-Doo,” to edit out scenes that glamorize smoking.

I just want to say that this is what happens when censorship gets out of control.

Come the hell on.
